“The word is elegance.”
This month’s Davidson Motors CAR OF THE MONTH is Bill Janes 1956 2.6 litre Lagonda Saloon.
This car was designed by W.O. Bentley, and features:
– 2.6 litre twin overhead cam
– 110 h.p.
– 4-wheel independent suspension, coils on the front, tension bar at the back
– Inboard rear brakes
– Body is aluminium on a wooden coach-built frame (individually built)
– It does 17-20 miles per gallon and has a 19 gallon petrol tank
Only 550 were built and maximum production was 15 per week.
It will do almost 100 m.p.h. It cost in the UK 3400 pounds, 12 shillings and 3 pence – this was expensive for the time. It was imported from the factory (into New Zealand) by a Mrs. Davies of Taneatua and the last owner was the Mayor of Ngaruawahia, who owned it for 16 years.
The Lagonda company was bought by David Brown and the engine was used in early Austin Martins.
I (Bill Janes) have owned it for 40 years. It was bought in derelict condition and totally re-built. It is a complicated machine but beautifully built. It has a comfortable ride.
